New York State Driver Assessment Fee
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles DMV will impose a driver assessment fee if you accumulate 6 or more points on your driver’s license or driving record during an 18 month period for violations that occur in New York State, Quebec Canada and Ontario Canada. This is in addition to any fines, surcharges and penalties that the court or DMV may impose. In determining the amount of points accumulated during an 18 month period, the points are calculated using the date of violation. The driver assessment fee starts at $300 ( $100 per year for 3 years ) for 6 points. For each point over 6 points, there is an additional $75 drivers assessment fee ( $25 per year for 3 years) An accumulation of 8 points on your license during an 18 month period will translate to a $450 driver assessment fee ( $150 per year for 3 years). The higher the points, the higher the driver assessment fee.
Those who accumulate 6 or more points within an 18 month period will be required to pay a drivers assessment fee regardless of whether they hold a New York State license, an out of state license or even if they have no license at all.
You will also be required to pay a drivers assessment fee if you are convicted of an alcohol related traffic infraction in New York State, if you are convicted of a drug related traffic violation in New York State, or if it has been determined after a DMV hearing that you refused a chemical test in New York State.
The New York State driver responsibility program went into effect on November 18, 2004. Tickets received prior to that date are not subject to a driver assessment fee.
